Read about someone who contacted us who was devastated when her son decided to move abroad taking his family with him.
ESRA replied:
Acknowledge your feelings, it's ok to feel devastated, sad or anxious about their move. Allow yourself to experience these emotions without judgement. Open communication, talk to your child. Ask what excites him about this new adventure and - express your feelings honestly but gently. Understanding his motives can help ease your worries. Focus on the positives, new experiences, personal growth, emphasizing the benefits of their decision. Stay connected and discuss ways to stay in touch. Knowing you can maintain a strong relationship might make the distance feel less daunting. Educate yourself so you know about the country or city they're moving to. Understanding their environment might help you feel more connected. Whilst it's tough to let go, remember that gaining independence is an essential part of growing up. Supporting them can strengthen your relationship in the long run. You might also find it helpful to talk to other parents who've gone through similar experiences or share your feelings with an ESRA counselor, who can offer support and share strategies for coping with the transition.
