Spreading Joy on Three Wheels

If you have ever strolled through the charming northern seaside city of Nahariya, you might have stumbled upon a delightful spectacle: "the musical man on the bicycle". This enchanting figure is none other than Shimon Horowitz, a beloved local character whose name has become synonymous with the vibrant spirit of the city.

For approximately four years, especially during the recent conflict, Shimon has tirelessly pedaled his colorful, flower-adorned tricycle through the bustling streets, transforming the atmosphere with a captivating medley of sounds that resonates deeply with residents and visitors. His melodies weave through the air like a warm embrace, offering solace and joy during challenging times. Many locals say that Shimon's daily appearances were a source of comfort, particularly during those tough days marked by the unsettling sounds of sirens echoing in the distance.

As people pass by, they cannot help but be drawn to him, some even stopping to request a memorable photo with this charming troubadour. For me, Shimon radiated an irresistible intrigue, sparking a desire to learn more about the story behind the man. After weeks of watching him bring smiles to faces, young and old, I finally mustered the courage to approach him and ask for an interview, eager to uncover the life behind the music.

At nearly 78 years old, this seventh-generation Jerusalemite has found his place at the heart of Nahariya, spreading joy and music throughout the city. After spending more than two decades in the United States, he returned to Israel four years ago, just as the COVID-19 pandemic began.

In the 1960s, Shimon first fell in love with melodies while living on Kibbutz Ma'ayan Tzvi, near Zichron Ya'akov. Armed with a small transistor radio, he would tune in to Radio Luxembourg and Radio London, soaking up the latest hits from the Beatles and other era icons. Shimon took on the role of the disc jockey at the local dance club, where pulsating beats and shimmering lights filled the sultry late summer air. His carefully curated playlists transformed the venue into a sanctuary for the lonely hearts of young kibbutzniks, inviting them to escape their solitude. Under the strobing lights and amidst swirling colors, Shimon skillfully blended tracks, encouraging laughter and whispered conversations, fostering deep connections that blossomed on the dance floor and beyond.

"I know about 50,000 songs," he proudly shares. "I can recognize them from the first few notes. In the U.S., I participated in radio shows like 'Name That Tune', where I won a lot of money just by identifying songs from their opening chords." Shimon is also a skilled harmonica player and brings his musical talents to retirement homes and centers for individuals with disabilities, volunteering his time to lift spirits.

Upon his arrival in Nahariya, he discovered a wellspring of inspiration during his leisurely strolls along the scenic promenade that hugs the shoreline. "I wanted to make people smile," he explains with a twinkle in his eye. An enchanting idea struck him—the vision of riding slowly through the vibrant streets, serenading passersby with music that could lift their spirits.

With the invaluable support of friends, he purchased a charming tricycle and outfitted it with powerful speakers, envisioning it as a delightful musical chariot. Over time, his tricycle transformed into a moving garden adorned with a riot of colorful flowers that danced in the breeze. He began to share his joy even further by handing fresh blooms to children he encountered, their laughter echoing in the air. "People smile, and many ask to take photos," he says with genuine warmth. "So, I make it a point to venture out almost every day to spread joy."

As Shimon meanders through the city, his eclectic playlist—ranging from upbeat pop hits to the serene strains of classical masterpieces—enchants all who cross his path. Children come running, their eyes sparkling with delight as they eagerly snap photos and receive the beautiful flowers from this generous musician, while grateful residents applaud the joy he injects into their everyday routine.

His passion for dance equally matches his love for music. Whether it be the elegance of ballroom, the fiery steps of tango, or the playful rhythm of cha-cha, he is always poised to join the dance floor. This whimsical musician's mission to bring joy to others traces back to the bustling streets of Las Vegas, where he would stroll while carrying a speaker, sharing vibrant tunes with those around him. "It all began in the U.S., but the tricycle adds that uniquely Nahariya flair," he smiles, radiating positivity.

In essence, Shimon is one-of-a-kind. Throughout his life, he has wholeheartedly dedicated himself to ensuring that those around him feel the warmth of smiles and the joy that music can bring. Whether through the lively music club or the enchanting rides that light up the streets of Nahariya, Shimon leaves an unforgettable impression on the lives of everyone fortunate enough to encounter him.

Even amidst challenging times, including the harrowing events of the last war, his unwavering commitment to joy has remained resolute. "Particularly during air raid sirens, I keep going, riding my tricycle and playing music. Nothing will deter me from spreading happiness," he insists with steadfast determination.

In fact, this remarkable Hemingway beard-styled individual reminds us of music's extraordinary power to uplift, connect, and illuminate our lives. Through the harmony of music, the beauty of flowers, and an unrelenting spirit of positivity, Shimon shows us the simple yet profound ways one person can lighten the world and create a brighter, more joyful place... a truly better one.
