IDC Students Come Down from the Ivory Tower . . .

IDC students from around the world, working together with ESRA

Photos: Sunny Marshansky

Universities in Israel encourage students to get their feet wet out in the world, experience the community around them, get involved, and make a difference for the betterment of society. IDC, the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya, is no exception.
Three times a year, IDC holds a fair introducing students to volunteering opportunities and organizations, ESRA among them. A list is drawn up of the fair's participants and throughout the year students are referred to it.

Thanks to the initiative of our CEO, Sunny Marshansky, ESRA's participation began two years ago, with 15 IDC student volunteers. Last year, the number grew to 54, and even mor are anticipated for this academic year. Students volunteer for 30 to 60 hours during the course of the year, and in exchange receive course credit. We have students helping out in our Nearly New Shop, and students working in the ESRA office where they update the Salesforce database, provide administrative assistance, and send posts to various online media. They make phone calls, membership calls, and assist the Booking Office. They help pack the ESRAmagazines, and upload content for the online magazine.

In addition, we've had students joining projects, from the Bayit Cham afternoon centers for young girls at risk, to Befriending, offering companionship to lonely elderly or housebound individuals. They also turn up for special events – many of you who attended may remember the numerous lovely students helping out at ESRA's 40th event.

Thank you – from around the world

Proud of volunteering with ESRA

ESRA's coordinator for IDC volunteers, Sandra Broza, has been the happy recipient of enthusiastic letters from students who have enjoyed their experience. Here are a few samples:

"I want to express my gratitude to you for connecting me with Bayit Cham for girls at risk.
This wonderful opportunity … has enriched my life in Israel immensely and I feel so blessed
to have the chance to be a part of such a beautiful place. I've completed my mandatory hours
but intend on continuing ... I have grown to love them all so much.
Thanks to you and to ESRA for making this experience possible."
Odelia Shor

"… Since my second year (at IDC), I volunteered with ESRA …. Those two years were really
special since I helped such a big and known organization. Thanks ESRA for the opportunity!
Debora Nasser, Olah Chadasha from Brazil

I just wanted to say thank you for all your help and patience while I completed my
volunteering hours. I really enjoyed my time at ESRA."
Michelle Meiler, Olah from Caracas, Venezuela

"Thank you so much for all the opportunity your organization has given me to volunteer and
really feel like I am making a difference … I hope to continue working with ESRA on future
volunteering projects through the duration of my college career."
