Fay Silverman 1934-2019

Fay Silverman passed away in San Francisco after suffering a massive stroke. Fay returned to her home town after living 20 years in Hod Hasharon, for health reasons but first waited for her twin grandchildren to complete their army service.

A week after her death, a group of ten women met in Hod Hasharon at the home of her dear friend and upstairs neighbor Evie Tamary. Most of us knew each other but all had shared a special relationship with Fay.

Fay and her husband Ed had been an integral and vital part of the Kfar Saba and Hod Hasharon branch of ESRA. They delivered the magazine for many long years and assisted and planned all the numerous events held during those years.

As we shared our coffee and pancakes, a favorite of Fay's, we remembered this unique lady who although never really learned to speak Hebrew. but with her warm personality and super smile managed to be greeted warmly by every shopkeeper on Magdiel Street as she walked by each day. Fay's flat on Yehudit Street had a huge terrace. The memories shared from the countless events held there brought lots of laughter. We talked about the ESRA parties, the square dances, the barbecues and all the other happy times.

Fay was a voracious reader and a real news junkie. She read the New York Times and Haaretzdaily from cover to cover. We belonged to the same book club and her comments and reviews of the selected books impressed us all.

An event that really affected her occurred during the second intifada. Fay, who had recently lost a young granddaughter to leukemia, read of a little Palestinian girl who had become paralyzed when a bomb dropped on her home killing her mother and other siblings. The little girl was sent to Alyn Hospital in Jerusalem where she was cared for with her father and younger brother. Fay became involved in the wellbeing of the child. She would travel to the hospital once a week by bus to visit them and remained in contact with the family even after they left the hospital.

Fay had an unbelievable sense of humor, her laughter filled the room no matter where. She was an entertainer and a star of the Sharon Players. She would get up and dance at the first note of the music. Most of all, she will be remembered for her joy of life and her often quoted "Life is an adventure, so get on with it and enjoy".
