David Isaac Margolis 1928-2014

DAVID MARGOLIS was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, to George and Betty Margolis. He was a keen and talented sportsman, captaining the first XV rugby team at Parktown Boys' High School. He was also a champion boxer and wrestler both at school and at university, where he studied accountancy. Later on in life he played league squash until the age of 60. David tragically lost his first wife, Myrna, at an early age. Myrna had been in a coma for ten years and during this time his devotion to her and his five children never wavered. After Myrna's passing, David was fortunate to meet the lovely Adele and they were married for 28 years, the last 20 of which were spent in Israel. David and Adele were happy in Israel and enjoyed being close to Adele's daughter Terry and son-in-law Nathan Mowszowski and family, as well as to his daughter Tessa, husband Baruch Tandler and family. David had always been kind and charitable and this continued in Israel where he and Adele devoted much time to ESRA – helping the blind, visiting and transporting the sick to hospitals and doctors' appointments, being the Netanya ESRA pickup man for all the second hand shops and being involved in every event and happening of ESRA Netanya with his sense of fun, warmth and humor and endless ability to pitch in wherever needed.

He was a very warm and friendly man of whom it was said: "To him a stranger was a friend whom he had not yet met."

He had an intelligent and enquiring mind and an exceptional memory. At the age of 75 he successfully wrote the MENSA test. His strong sense of justice resulted in him bravely going to the rescue of mugging victims in South Africa on a number of occasions. He was also the first person to successfully prosecute a magistrate for unjust conduct in the Supreme Court of SA.

David will be remembered by all for his friendly personality, kindness, courage and wit.
