Israel: It is Such a Broad Canvas

In honor of the 70th anniversary of the State of Israel, GINA Gallery of International Naïve Art in Tel Aviv dedicated a recent exhibition, "The Land We Love: The Naïve Art of Israel", to Israel's leading naive artists. In contrast to the conflicts and tensions that pervade our everyday lives, these artists' joyful, heartwarming artworks provide a loving view of a young, free and blossoming country, bursting with innovation and inspiration.

Each of the Israeli naïve artists has a fascinating story to share, influenced by the artist's origin, culture, personal history and immediate surroundings. Zoe Sever, whose artwork graces ESRAmagazine's cover, came on aliyah from the Ukraine in 1990.

Her works reflect a dramatic dialogue between breathtaking landscape and urban scenes, and remind us of the incredible country that Israel has become. Galia Ron's surroundings in northern Israel provide the backdrop for her mossy meadows and glistening groves, and reflect the artist's deep love for the land and life's serene moments. Aviva Sonsino shares with great intimacy childhood memories of her aliyah from Poland and her integration into the "melting pot" of Israel's society. Yitzhak ("Iki") Buberman's artworks insightfully depict the iconic sights of Tel Aviv, embracing the ebb and flow of "the City that Never Sleeps."

By providing an idealized, enchantingly innocent view of life, the naïve artist enriches our lives and souls and, in the process, transforms our world into a heart's delight.
