Calendar Girl

As a relatively new immigrant, I had heard from several sources that it would be a good idea if we had a communal calendar for the English speaking community to avoid the duplication of dates from the ever expanding number of organizations in Modiin. The task was placed in front of me, and so began the research to bring it all together.

Many phone calls were made to all the English speaking groups, seeking their social calendar which covered lectures, theater, party dates, brunches, outings, etc.

The time of year to start this was perhaps not the best, but persistence paid off and eventually the first calendar was launched on August 1st. Feedback from most of the organizations has been slow, due in part to the summer holidays, an intervening war and the beginning of the school year. It is music to my ears and joy to my eyes to receive a phone call or email with information for the calendar.

Once the school and work year commenced, I felt confident that information would flow towards me and slowly this is happening.

Every month, the calendar is emailed to each English speaking organization which wished to be included, as well as to any individual person who wishes to receive it. By placing a message on the local Modiin list about the availability of this calendar, it is hoped that more and more people will check the copy they have or make a quick phone call to me to make sure the planning of their function is not clashing with another one. Each organization will benefit from its own individual date for a function rather than each one trying to compete with another.

The spirit of communal organization is alive and well in Modiin!
