Model UN Team from Sderot

The Sderot UN youth team

Herb Levine founded Sderot Young Leaders in 2008 to help empower the youth of Sderot as a response to the constant rocket attacks from Gaza. SYL gives students in Sderot an opportunity to develop high English proficiency skills, while learning about current events, debate skills, robotics, science, and the importance of volunteering in the community. ESRA is a big supporter of these activities and funds the debate coach who comes weekly to work with the students. In addition to extracurricular activities in the city, students have been sent all over the world as representatives of Sderot to places including New Jersey, London, Toronto, and New York.

The Model UN this year has been participating in conferences around Israel, learning how the UN operates and debates topics. The team is assigned a country to represent, and needs to discuss and negotiate with other countries, which are represented by other schools from Israel.

Most recently, the Model UN team went to a competition in Lod, accompanied by Talia Isaacson, an American new immigrant living in Sderot.

Sderot will be hosting its first mini Model UN in 2020, and has created a Model UN Junior team so younger students can start learning about the UN and how to participate in the conferences in the coming years.
